The Surgical Foreign Object Case. Who's to Blame?

Abstract

Joan Magnusson, BSN RN LHRM LNCC, has provided legal nurse consulting services for the past 20 years. She will present the LNC’s role in the pursuit of a case involving the retention of a surgical instrument. This presentation shows the current state of medical malpractice litigation in Florida and why LNC’s must be prepared to work with attorneys to cover all aspects of liability in each case.

Biography

Joan MagnussonJoan K. Magnusson, BSN RN LHRM LNCC, is the owner of JKM Consulting, LLC. She provided legal nurse consulting services to law firms throughout central Florida. Magnusson's clinical background includes experience in peri-operative nursing, nursing staff development/education, infection control/epidemiology, and hospital risk management. She is a charter member of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC). She served on the national board of directors for five years, and was president 1995-96. From 1997-2001, Magnusson served as the chairperson of the board of directors of the American Legal Nurse Consultant Certification Board (ALNCCB) and was integral in the development of the official nursing specialty certification for legal nurse consultants. She was a co-editor of the Legal Nurse Consulting Principles and Practices, Second Edition.
